A folding-arm awning is fixed to the wall, so nothing stands on the terrace: there is no post to kick and no concreting either.
There are several versions, from the simple folding-arm type to the fully cassetted structure. The cassette closes over the fabric when it retracts, so rain and dust do not reach it and it stays looking good for longer.
It works with a manual crank and with a motor. A wind and light sensor can be ordered for the motorised version, which draws it in by itself in the wind. On a balcony this is not a luxury: that is where the risk of a gust destroying it is greatest.

Fitting it later means a separate call-out and separate making good. On a high-mounted structure scaffolding is occasionally needed too, but that only comes up a few times a year. If it is done in the same visit as the window replacement, most of this falls away.
